Tongwei Joins Three Leading Global Renewable Energy Organizations, Contributing a Chinese Model to the Global Clean Energy Transition
On June 11, during the SNEC 2025 exhibition, Tongwei officially announced its membership in three of the most influential international renewable energy organizations: the Global Solar Council (GSC), the IRENA Coalition for Action, and the Solar Stewardship Initiative (SSI). This milestone marks the first time Tongwei has joined all three organizations simultaneously, underscoring its strategic ambition and active commitment to advancing global energy transformation and sustainable development.
At the exhibition, GSC CEO Sonia Dunlop presented the official membership certificate to Tongwei, received by Dr. Zhu Zihan, Chief Sustainability Officer of Tongwei. During Intersolar 2025, Rachel Owens, CEO of SSI, held in-depth discussions with Tongwei on sustainable management within the solar industry. At SNEC, Jarred McCarthy from the IRENA Coalition for Action delivered a welcoming address, celebrating Tongwei’s official entry and looking forward to collaboration in building a sustainable energy future.
These three organizations play pivotal roles in promoting renewable energy adoption, accelerating solar innovation, and shaping global clean energy policy. GSC focuses on global solar advocacy and deployment. The IRENA Coalition for Action fosters cooperation among governments and stakeholders to expand renewables’ share in global energy systems. SSI is committed to driving sustainability and accountability within the solar value chain. Tongwei’s membership brings robust industrial support and fresh momentum to each platform, contributing to the next phase of global energy transformation.
Facing growing global resource constraints, climate uncertainty, and a shifting commercial landscape, Tongwei—ranked among the Fortune Global 500 as the first photovoltaic enterprise—has adhered to a green development strategy for over 43 years. Under its core mission of “Together to Win,” Tongwei pioneered the 3S Sustainable Development Management Framework:
Strategy – Stewardship – Solution, integrating the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) deeply into its operational practices.
From goal-setting and metric alignment to standard benchmarking and governance reinforcement, Tongwei has established a full-cycle ESG governance model linking top-level strategy to on-the-ground execution. This framework enables coordinated progress across environmental, social, and governance dimensions. Through initiatives such as “zero-waste factories” and its globally recognized best practices under the UN Global Compact, Tongwei has demonstrated strong strategic resilience and offers replicable, quantifiable ESG solutions for global enterprises.
In 2024, Tongwei set 13 sustainability commitments, established 20 measurable sustainability goals, and joined 10 international sustainability initiatives, creating a comprehensive ESG ecosystem covering environmental governance and social value. Environmentally, Tongwei achieved a 16% year-on-year reduction in organizational carbon intensity, expanded to 68 carbon footprint and EPD certifications, and reduced pollutant emissions by over 20% through a smart environmental management system. Its renewable energy consumption surpassed 23.96 TWh, reaffirming its leadership in clean energy use within the PV sector. Tongwei also achieved a major milestone in supply chain traceability—becoming the first company to pass TÜV Rheinland’s full traceability audit with an all-A rating across the entire lifecycle.
In May 2025, Tongwei launched the “Global Sustainable Partnership Program,” an extension of its “Together to Win” strategy and 3T Mission / 4W Vision. The program is built on three pillars—co-construction, co-governance, and co-benefit—and aims to foster deep collaboration with global stakeholders, including industry peers, research institutions, governments, and NGOs. Together, they will build a resilient and sustainable green industrial ecosystem, providing a “Tongwei Solution” for global sustainable development.
Thanks to its outstanding ESG performance, Tongwei has received more than 70 sustainability-related awards, including consistent inclusion in the Fortune China ESG Impact List, the Top 100 Chinese ESG Public Companies, and the UN Global Compact’s “20 Best Practices in China”.
Dr. Zhu Zihan remarked,
“As a global PV leader, Tongwei has long been dedicated to climate action and aspires to become a world-class, internationally influential energy provider. We have actively participated in global initiatives such as the UN Global Compact and RE100, and have been present at the UN Climate Conference for five consecutive years. Our ‘Together to Win’ sustainability strategy has earned wide recognition globally, showcasing the responsibility and leadership of Chinese PV enterprises. Joining these three major organizations is a significant step in expanding our international presence and deepening our corporate responsibility.”
With ESG now embedded across all levels of corporate governance, technological innovation, and global development, Tongwei is redefining what it means to grow responsibly. The company believes that only businesses that proactively embrace responsibility and seek solutions will thrive in future global competition. Tongwei’s ESG efforts not only enhance its resilience and vitality but also contribute meaningfully to the advancement of global society.
Looking ahead, Tongwei will leverage its new memberships to further strengthen communication and collaboration with international organizations and industry partners, jointly exploring new pathways for renewable energy development. Through deeper engagement, Tongwei aims to inject greater momentum into the global clean energy transition and sustainable development movement.
